Lee Reid Scholarship Fund

In October 1993, the LOAS conference established a partial scholarship fund to provide families with financial assistance for their hotel bill. In October 1997, it was named the Lee Reid Scholarship Fund in honor of Rev. Lee Reid, a LOAS conferee who passed away that year. Currently, the scholarship committee has approval to grant partial scholarships to anyone who applies for a scholarship, with the maximum number of three partial scholarships given to any recipient. For more information on the LOAS scholarship program, contact Marie Dupree, chair of the scholarship fund.

We are not able to give full scholarships, therefore we ask when registering, you should  pay the hotel deposit and for the LOAS conference registration fee.

Scholarship requests must be received by April 15, 2010.

Financial Assistance

Star Island Corporation is launching pilot financial aid program for the 2010 season, and has set aside a total of $20,000 to support this effort. The confidential program is available to individuals and families that are registered for a conference and have not received a conference scholarship. Please note awards are always partial, and depend on the number of applications received. Please return the form before May 1 for conferences starting before August 28, or July 1 for conferences starting on or after August 28. You may not receive a scholarship from both an individual conference and Star Island Corporation. Download the Financial Aid form HERE

10-10 Bring a Friend

The “10/10 Bring a Friend” program is continuing in 2010, after a successful launch in 2009. “New Shoalers” who are recruited to attend a conference by Returning Shoalers can fill out a discount request form to receive a 10% discount on room and board fees for one member of both parties. Returning Shoalers who recruit five or more New Shoaler individuals or families will be recognized for their efforts and presented with a special treat or two on the Island!

Download the 10/10 Bring a Friend form (to be filled out by the New Shoaler).

If a Returning Shoaler is successful in encouraging several people to register, will they get multiple 10% discounts?
No, the maximum room & board discount a Returning Shoaler can receive is 10%. However, Returning Shoalers who are successful in bringing five or more New Shoaler individuals to Star will receive special recognition and a treat or two while on-Island!

If a Returning Shoaler family is successful in getting a New Shoaler individual to register does the entire family get a 10% discount, or just one member of the family?
The program works on a one-to-one basis, so just one member of the family receives the 10% discount if a family recruits one individual. However, if the Returning Shoaler family recruits two New Shoalers, two members of the Returning Shoaler family will receive a discount. If the Returning Shoaler family recruits three New Shoalers, three members of the Returning Shoaler family will receive a discount, etc. Under all circumstances, the maximum room & board discount any individual is entitled to is 10% (whether they’re a New or Returning Shoaler).

Will SIC give the 10-10 discount to conferees already getting scholarship assistance from their conferences?
Yes.  We will not ask conferences for individual scholarship award information.

Will SIC disclose to the conferences who is receiving 10-10 discounts?
No.  Nor do we want to know who is receiving scholarship funds from the conferences.

Are people who have already applied eligible for the 10-10 discount?
Yes.  This discount is available to everyone who has registered already or who will be registering (for the 2010 season).

Is the 10-10 discount(s) applied to the entire bill?
No.  The discount applies to the room and board portion of the bill only.
